What's a conditional in english?

     It's a kind of tense that is used to describe the result of something that might happen or might have happened but it didn't . They are actually some of the most useful structures in English and are commonly included in daily conversations. There are two kinds of conditional sentences: real and unreal. Real Conditional describes real life situations. Unreal Conditional describes unreal, imaginary situations.

     Right now exist four kinds of conditionals.
               -The Zero Conditional.
               -The First Conditional.
               -The Second Conditional.
               -The Third Conditional.

The Zero Conditional

     This conditional is used when the result will always happen without a doubt.

Structure 

If + Simple Present + Simple Present

    (If Clause + Main Clause)

Examples

-If Ricardo eats too much, he gets fat.

-If you touch a fire, you get burned.

Tips

1. When you use "it", "she" and "he", we must put a "S" in ther verb.
2.When made a negative sentence in simple present we use "don't" with "they", "I" and "we", but with  "it", "she" and "he" we must use "doesn´t".

The First Conditional

     The first conditional describes a particular situation and its probable result in the present or future. These sentences are based on a fact in real time.

Structure

If + Simple Present + Will + Infinitive

  (If Clause  +   Main Clause)

Examples

- If I wake up early, I'll take the bus on time.

- If the weather is nice, we will go for a walk.

Tips

1. One common mistake. when we made a sentence with first conditional is to put will in the conditional clause. The conditional clause must remain in the simple present tense.
              Incorrect: Sam won't go to the dance unless you will ask him.
              Correct: Sam won't go to the dance unless you ask him.

The Second Conditional

     Unreal conditional sentences express imaginary situations. 

Structure

If + simple past, would + verb base form.

Example

If I had a plane, I would travel around the world.
If Andrea was a millionare, she would buy a big house.

Tips

1. If clause contains verb to be, use were for all the subjects.
Example: If I were an animal, I´d be a panda.
2.Unreal conditional can also be formed with the past continuous in the if clause.
Example: If I were leaving now, I might walk to work.
3. In the if clause, the simple past or past continuous does not indicate past time; it indicates that the situation is unreal. In the results clause, would, could-would be able to, or might also indicate that the results is unreal.
4.Would in the results clauses expresses more certainty than could or might about the imaginary results.

The Third Conditional

     We use the third conditional to talk about the possible outcomes of situations that happened in the past. It’s a conditional because we cannot change the results of an event, but we can imagine what would have happened. 

Structure 

If + Subject + Past perfect + Subject + Modal + Have + Past Participle 

Examples

-If I had studied harder, I would have passed the test.

-If she had slept earlier, she wouldn’t have been tired for her interview. 

-If he had left sooner, he wouldn’t be stuck in traffic.

-If they had paid attention in class, they wouldn’t have failed the course.

Tips

1.If you’re having trouble identifying the third conditional remember, Past = Third conditional.

2.The “if clause” can be omitted in the third conditional when it’s implied in the sentence. Example: I would have gone (if you had invited me)

3.Don’t use third conditional only for regrets, it can have a positive connotation. Example: If I hadn’t gone on that trip, I wouldn’t have met my wife.
